An ESI card (e-Pehchan card) is a health card given to beneficiaries of the Employees' State Insurance (ESI) scheme.

The scheme was implemented by the Ministry of Labour and Employment to protect workers' interests in the case of a medical emergency.

Any company or establishment with more than ten employees must register with the ESI scheme.

The Employees' State Insurance Corporation, an autonomous body under the government of India, manages the scheme under the guidelines of the ESI Act, 1948.

The ESI Scheme is a social security health insurance scheme that allows beneficiaries and their dependent family members to receive

  • Medical treatment benefits, 
  • Maternity benefits (in the case of female employees), and
  • Unemployment cash benefits (only in specific cases).

If an insured person dies or is left unable to work as a result of an employment-related accident, their family are eligible for a pension benefit and a disablement payment, respectively.

ESIC Contribution by Employee / ESIC Contribution by Employer

Employee contributions are 0.75 percent of wages.

Employer contributions are 3.25 percent of wages paid/payable in respect of employees in each payment (normally monthly payment).

What is ESIC

Employees' State Insurance Corporation is abbreviated as ESI.

It is a self-funded social security and health insurance programme for Indian workers.

Employee State Insurance Corporation manages ESIC. 

It runs in accordance with the rules and regulations outlined in the ESI Act of 1948.

ESIC is a self-governing organisation that reports to the Ministry of Labor and Employment.

ESIC can be accessed through the ESIC portal.

The ESI card is also known as the ESIC e-Pehchan card.

Earlier it was a PVC magnetic card that was issued to every insured person under the ESIC act in order for them to receive various ESIC benefits.

Nowadays E-Pehchan is issued, which is printed in A4 size paper (Xerox Paper) both front and back.

Employees' State Insurance Act of 1948 established a social security system that would safeguard workers' interests.

ESIC covers illness, maternity leave. Parental leave, temporary or permanent physical disability, and death as a result of workplace injuries that result in a loss of wages or earning capacity.

Under the ESI Act, the following enterprises are required to register:

  • Few states have workers of more than ten or twenty people (Maharashtra and Chandigarh)
  • Employees are paid a maximum salary of Rs 15000 per month.

For medical treatment of insured persons or family members, an ESI E-pehchan card must be produced at ESI hospitals and dispensaries.

ESIC Pehchan Card Contents

The ESIC pehchan card contains all information about an insured person.

On the ESI card, many details are listed such as :

  • name,
  • father's name,
  • insurance number, and
  • full address
  • Beneficiary Dependent Family members etc. 

This information is submitted during the ESIC registration process on the ESIC portal.

It also includes an image of the insured person as well as Biometric information such as the insured person's fingerprints. 

On their e-pehchan card, family members' photographs and fingerprints are provided.

As previously stated, every employee registered in the ESI scheme receive an identity card known as e-Pehchan card or ESI card.

This card must be presented for receiving services at an ESI network hospital or dispensary.

The employee's name, father's name, address, and insurance number are all listed on the Pehchan card.

ESI Card or e-Pehchan Card Features and Benefits

  • An employee receives only one ESIC card. 
  • This pehchan card is valid for life, and the insured person does not need to apply for a new card if he or she changes jobs or works for a different company.
  • The most important benefit of using the ESIC scheme is that it allows the insured person to receive seamless ESIC medical benefits across the all India network of ESIC hospitals and dispensaries.
  • An ESIC card is a magnetic card that contains all of a person's medical information. This will be especially useful in the future when receiving treatment at an ESIC-affiliated hospital.
  • Having an ESIC pehchan card is required for receiving various ESIC scheme benefits such as medical and illness benefits, disablement benefits, maternity benefits, unemployment allowances, and so on.
  • Because the e-Pehchan Card is a secured card, the insured individual does not need to be concerned about its misuse. 
  • This card is protected by the insured person's biometric authentication.
  • To update ESIC employee contributions, insured persons must register on the ESIC portal and update their information in real-time.
  • An insured person can modify his or her own personal information, such as phone number. It can be updated by logging in to the ESIC portal or informing the employer to update on the ESIC site.
  • A physical copy of the ESIC e-pehchan card must be presented when receiving medical treatment at a hospital.

How to Apply for/Obtain an ESIC E-Pehchan Card

ESI members can use their ESIC IP number to download their temporary ESIC id card, however, they must depend on their employer for this.

Because only an employer's ESIC site (page) allows them to download a temporary ESIC card for an ESI member.

ESI members can receive their genuine ESIC e-Pehchan card by using this temporary ESIC ID card.

  • Visit the esic.in website to obtain an ESIC card.
  • On the right-hand side of the homepage, you'll see a link that says "Click here to login," which you should click.
  • Now enter your company's ESIC code number, password, and captcha that appears on the screen, and then click Login.
  • Now, in the employee section of the home page, there is an option called e-Pehchan Card, which you should click on.
  • A new tab will open, where you can enter the insured person's IP address. It is not necessary to provide the employer's and employee's names; only the employee's ESIC number is required.
  • Now click on see counterfoil; the ESI member's e-pehchan card will open; at the bottom of the e-Pehchan card, there is a print option.
  • In the event of an emergency, if the insured person does not have an ESIC e-Pehchan card, they must obtain one with the help of their employer. 
  • They can receive treatment at an ESIC dispensary by presenting this card.

ESIC card instruction

  1. As an employee, it is critical to inform your new employer of your former ESIC Card information. 
  2. The most crucial information on an ESI card is the ESI registration number.
  3. There is no need to register for a new ESIC card if a person changes jobs. Benefits could be obtained with an old e-Pehchan card.
  4. His/her ESIC employee contribution must be provided to the new employer using the same ESIC card number.
  5. If an employee needs to take advantage of ESIC's many services and benefits. Then, having an ESIC card is a must.
  6. ESIC is also interconnected with EPF benefits. So if you hide about your early company's details and ESIC it may create problems.
