The first significant legislation on social security for workers in independent India was the Employees' State Insurance Act, 1948 (ESI Act), passed by the Parliament.

India, notwithstanding, thus, took the lead in providing organised social protection to the working class through statutory provisions.

The ESI Act 1948 covers some health-related eventualities that workers are usually subjected to, including sickness, maternity, temporary or permanent disablement, occupational disease, or death resulting from industrial damage, therefore causing loss of wages or earning ability, either complete or partial.

By means of protection from deprivation, destitution, and social degradation, social security provisions made in the Act to counterbalance or negate the resulting physical or financial misery in such contingencies aim at upholding human dignity in times of crises while allowing society to retain a continuity of socially useful and productive manpower.
