Benefits of ESIC

Section 46 of the Act provides for the following six social security benefits:

(a) Medical Benefit

(b) Sickness Benefit (SB)

  1. Extended sickness Benefit (ESB)
  2. Enhanced Sickness Benefit

(c) Maternity Benefit (MB)

(d) Disablement Benefit

  1. TDB (Temporary Disablement Benefit)
  2. PDB (Permanent Disablement Benefit)

(e) Dependant's Benefit(DB)

(f) Funeral Expenses

The ESI Scheme has an impressive feature in that contributions are related to the capital contribution as a fixed percentage of the workers' wages.

Social security and medicare are provided without distinction based on individual needs.

Cash Benefits those are disbursed by the Corporation through its:-

  • Local Offices (LOs)
  • Mini Local Offices (MLOs)
  • Sub Local Offices (SLOs)
  • Pay Offices (PO),

It is subject to certain contributory conditions.

Furthermore, the scheme offers some other need-based benefits to insured workers.

These includes:

  1. Rehabilitation allowance
  2. Vocational Rehabilitation
  3. Unemployment Allowance (in case of Unemployment due to some valid reasons) that comes Under Rajiv Gandhi Shramik Kalyan Yojana)

Applicability

The ESI Act is applicable to all non-seasonal factories employing 10 or more persons, according to Section 2(12).

The State Government has extended to cover these Companies/Organisation under Section 1(5) of the Act are mentioned below :

  • Shops,
  • Hotel,
  • Restaurants,
  • Cinema including preview theatres,
  • Road-motor transport undertakings,
  • Newspaper establishments,
  • Private Medical Institutions,
  • Educational Institutions and
  • Contract-based and Casual employees of Municipal Corporation (Municipal Bodies)

This Act applies to those who employ 10 or more persons in certain States/UTs, where State Govt. is the appropriate Govt.

The Central Government has extended its ESIC coverage under Section 1(5) to the Companies/Organisations mentioned below :

  • Shops,
  • Hotels,
  • Restaurants,
  • Road Motor Transport establishments,
  • Cinema including preview theatres,
  • Newspaper establishments,
  • Insurance Business establishment,
  • Non-Banking Financial Companies,
  • Port Trust, Airport Authorities,
  • Warehousing establishments

This Act applies to those who employ 20 or more Persons, where Central Govt. is the appropriate Govt (in the case of Union Territories like Delhi, Chandigarh, Daman, and Div, Ponidicherry.

Wage Limit by ESIC

As per the latest amendment, the current wage limit to be covered under the Act effective from 01.01.2017 is :-

  1. Rs. 21,000/- per month
  2. Rs. 25,000/- per month (in the case of Persons with Disability).
